Rangers have been piped to the signing of Scunthorpe's leading striker Paul Hayes who agreed a deal with Barnsley before any talks had begun between the clubs.
Ian Holloway had marked Hayes (21) as one of the young talents he wanted to bring to Loftus Road but it was Barnsley who moved fastest, agreeing a deal to bring the player to Oakwell within a day.
Hayes was an impressive force in League 2 last season and despite Scunthorpe’s promotion to League 1 they decided to cash in on their star striker.
With Tony Thorpe and Jamie Cureton released at the start of the summer, Holloway is in the market for a striker and Hayes was one player to have been earmarked by the Rangers boss.
